St Anselm’s Church

ALN Acoustic Design is providing acoustic consultancy for the sensitive internal redevelopment of St Anselm’s Church in Kennington, a Grade II-listed building. The project involves the creation of new multi-purpose spaces within a section of the existing nave, intended for meetings, Sunday School, and broader community use.

A key acoustic challenge is ensuring these new spaces can operate independently without disrupting ongoing services in the main nave. To achieve this, we developed bespoke wall and floor constructions to deliver high levels of sound insulation, carefully integrated within the constraints of the original fabric. The detailing has been approached with precision, respecting both the heritage value of the building and the acoustic performance required.

Another critical aspect of the project is improving speech intelligibility within the nave, vital for sermons and spoken liturgy, while preserving its naturally reverberant and atmospheric acoustic character. We undertook detailed acoustic modelling to evaluate the impact of proposed interventions and ensure a sensitive balance between clarity and ambience.
