Originally constructed in the late 19th century as Redruth Library, The Ladder is now being transformed into a vibrant creative hub, incorporating studios, co-working areas, and flexible event spaces for music, community gatherings, classes, and more.
Early-stage acoustic testing revealed that the existing floor constructions offered minimal sound insulation—particularly against impact noise such as footfall. With multiple activities expected to occur simultaneously across different parts of the building, it was essential to control sound transmission between spaces. We worked closely with the architect and structural engineer to identify effective, buildable interventions that significantly improved acoustic separation while respecting the building’s historic fabric.
Given the heritage constraints, there was limited scope to alter the appearance of the original ceilings. This required a highly creative approach to the placement and design of acoustic treatments, carefully integrating them into less visually sensitive areas and using finishes sympathetic to the building’s character.
